About Aileen

I draw upon my previous experience as an educator to craft meaningful interactions. Teaching students has shown me how to iterate solutions, distill important information, and communicate complex ideas and emotions. These skills empower me as a researcher, designer, and presenter.

I have an insatiable sense of curiosity. I love asking questions because I love hearing other people’s stories. It’s what draws me to product design: I want to hear from users and design products that center their needs.

For me, the heart of life is connection. In design, I connect with users to better understand what delights them. This allows me to gain valuable insights that inform my designs. Then, I connect with stakeholders to present these stories and solutions with clarity and empathy.

I think life is best lived when it is equal parts thoughtful and playful, and design allows me to work with this balance as a creative problem-solver. If you feel similarly, reach out to me and let's work together!

FAQ

Why should a former teacher be a designer?

At its heart, teaching is about understanding others, communicating information effectively, and designing learning experiences. I see enormous parallels between the design process and the teaching process. As an educator, I had to account for student mental modes and build curriculum with meaningful student experiences. Each day, I iterated upon my work to adjust and better those learning opportunities. As a designer, I seek to use those same communication and creativity skills to build user-centered products. Teachers are adaptable, empathetic, creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented, all qualities that help me be a better product designer.

What are your interests beyond design?

When I'm not working as a product designer, you can find me birdwatching, reading, baking, knitting, water coloring, writing, snowshoeing, or playing board games (especially Wingspan).

How do you pronounce your name, Aileen?

Excellent question! You can think of the first syllable like the "ale" in ginger ale. Or, think of it like the word "sail" without the s. You can always ask me for help on how to pronounce my name.
